How to Get Organized at Home

Home organziation can seem overwhelming especially if you have let your home get a bit out of control and cluutered. The great news is that by doing just a little but each day and creating home organizton habits and routines, you will se a HUGE change in your home. The following tips for getting organized at home will make your home tider and less stressful.

Home Decluttering Tips

You’ll need to begin by decluttering. The most important part of this process is to purge unnecessary items from your home. It is nearly impossible to keep a home organized that is bursting at the seams with items that aren’t loved and are rarely used. I struggle with this myself that is why the following steps are so important.

Tackle one space at a time to prevent becoming overwhelmed. And if that space is especially daunting, let’s say the kitchen organization for example, divide it up into sections. On day one work on the cabinets, day two the pantry, and so on. Start with making a plan with a schedule of which rooms and spaces you will address on specific days. I found just writing a list and blocking out time to work on it helps me actually get started. When you are ready to get started with purging items and placing kept items in an organized space, prepare yourself with the following:

  • Three Boxes or Bins – Have a box for keep, a box for donate or sell, and a trash box. First things first, go around the room and move everything into one of those three boxes. That will create an empty space that can be thoroughly cleaned. This works great for kids too. Kids are often overwhelmed by the pure amount of stuff so sorting can help them get started. Just be sure that they don’t put everything in the keep box.
  • Cleaning Supplies – Have a caddy ready with cleaning supplies to deep clean your empty space once all the items have been removed. I am a big fan of Grove Collective for natural cleaning supplies. Here is a nice offer for free cleaning supplies when you spend $20.
  • Containers and Bins – Once you’ve emptied all of the drawers, cabinets, and spaces, you’ll need bins and containers to place items back in an organized manner.
  • Label Maker – Grab a label maker to label bins and containers. Having things labeled will keep continuity with your whole family knowing what item goes in that location. I have this label maker and love it.

A Place for Everything – Tips To Stay Organized

You’ve likely heard the saying, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” This is the key to keeping an organized home. Once you’ve completely purged and organized each room, every item you own should have a home – a place that makes sense and is clean and put away. If you bring in a new item, find a place for it to go immediately. If everything has a place in your home where it belongs when picked up and put away, it makes keeping a clean and organized home so simple! If you don’t have a spot for the new item, you need to either get rid of something you already have or return the item. I know that is tough but I know from experience the slippery slope of clutter that starts to happen when you bring new things into your home without a plan.

Getting Organized Ideas – Touch It Once

When you are finished using an item or bring an item in such as bags from a store, touch it once! Don’t drop all of your items from your car on the counter to address later. Don’t place that cereal bowl on the side table to put in the sink later. Don’t toss your jacket over the couch to hang later. Create a habit of touching items only one. Put them away as soon as you’re finished using them. It takes only seconds to put an item away immediately, and sometimes hours to address a large number of items that were thoughtlessly laid down, and now all have to be addressed at once.

Never Leave Empty Handed

Never leave a room empty-handed. If you take a bathroom break, empty the trash bin while you’re in there or grab the laundry that was tossed on the floor. If you walk in your room to grab a book, glance around for anything in that room that doesn’t belong in there and put it away. Making it a habit to put things away as you notice them out of place will help keep things tidy and organized.

Don’t Sweat It

All of these are great ways to keep your home organized, but the most important thing to remember is to not sweat it. Don’t get so consumed with having a perfect home that you create stress and anxiety in your life. Having an organized home can help bring peace and tranquility into your home, but if you are constantly comparing yourself to Pinterest boards or Martha Stewart, that peace will quickly dissipate. They say that comparison is the thief of joy and that statement holds true where your home is concerned. What are some ways that you and your family keep things tidy and organized?

I like that last tip especially about not sweating it. I find that if I let it get overwhelming, I just won’t do it. But taking little steps here and there really helps, and bins with labels seem to be a great idea – though it adds up for sure.
