How To Build A Business Casual Wardrobe
Creating a business casual wardrobe is something that everyone should do. Not only does it give you options for what to wear to work, but it also gives you clothing that you can mix and match and wear during other times of the year as well.
What makes an Outfit Business Casual?
This is the question that everyone wants an answer to! The truth of the matter is that there isn’t just one rule when it comes to dressing business casual. Business casual can be as simple as pairing a dressy shirt with a nice pair of dress slacks or khakis or even wearing a blazer with a pair of dress pants as well.
If you have a great blazer and top, you can easily make several business casual outfits out of that by pairing it with a nice pair of pants or even a nice skirt.
Are jeans OK for business casual?
This might be a bit of a trick question. Some workplaces think that jeans are fine for business casual while others don’t. Just to be sure of the dress code, it’s always a good idea to ask.
Jeans may be considered business casual if you pair them with a nice top and a nice pair of shoes. It’s also important to remember that the jeans shouldn’t haven’t any holes, rips, or be faded or dirty.
Is it unprofessional to wear open-toed shoes?
Not really anymore. If you work in a business casual atmosphere, open-toed shoes are probably no big deal.
How Many Pieces Do You Need in a Work Wardrobe
The trick to being able to balance a little bit of business casual options while not crowding your closet is to have a few key pieces that you can mix and match.
I’ve talked about how to start a capsule wardrobe, so this is a similar thought process.
To have a good business casual wardrobe, having 5 pairs of pants and about 7 business casual shirts would be a great start. You can also add in some skirts as well.
If you’re able to wear one shirt with all 5 pants and the skirt, you’ve basically given yourself the option for 6 different outfit combinations, just like that!
Don’t forget to add in a few pairs of casual and dressy shoes and you’re well on your way to having the perfect wardrobe for your work.
Best Tips for Dressing Business Casual
One of the biggest tips that I like to remember is that having a black blazer will be a life saver. If you’re ever in doubt if what you’re wearing is “dressy” enough, throw on your black blazer and you’ll be fine.
Also, don’t forget that dresses that are casual will totally work, too! Just be mindful of the cut and of the length and you can score some really great summer dresses to wear to work. If you have to, you can easily wear a cardigan over the top of the dress to make it a bit dressier as well.
With these simple tips, you’ll have the perfect business casual wardrobe for yourself in no time at all! Buy clothes that you like, and that you’re looking forward to wearing!
